Hotels in Barcelona, particularly the more expensive ones, tend to be relatively large and (very) modern. A new four star hotel seems to open on a weekly basis while the supply of five star hotels in Barcelona also continues to grow at a steady rate.
As Barcelona plays host to major conferences, is a major tourist destination, and is home to many multinationals, most hotels cater to a combination of both business and leisure guests.
Four and Five star hotels are located throughout the city, with the largest concentration in Barcelona’s central areas:The Barrio Gotico (Barcelona’s tourist epic-centre) and The Eixample (the century-old area of wide avenues and elegant mansion blocks which forms most of central Barcelona).
Since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 many hotels have also been built in the coastal neighbourhoods (Olympic Port, Poblenou), in the northern half of Barcelona. Almost all are four or five star hotels, housed in inoffensive, but unspectacular, buildings with fashionably-designed lobbies and well-appointed rooms.
